Today the Bacchus Marsh Centre held their annual cross country open day. This year we relocated our event to the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse. We welcomed athletes from Centres across the state - Ararat, Ballarat, Benalla, Geelong, Melton South, Newport, Rutherglen & Werribee. The course provided some challenging terrain and was an ideal preparation for State Cross Country at Warragul with the long gruelling hill climb. Unfortunately, the overnight rain turned the start/finish area into a muddy bog but this did not deter the athletes from providing some very fast, close finishes to the races. 

Many thanks to all those who contributed to the success of the day – to those who helped out in the recording area, the finish/start line, rabbits & turtles and canteen helpers, your assistance was much appreciated. Thanks to Peter McDonald for your commentary throughout the day and the occasional live interview with competing athletes. Finally, a massive thanks to our Cross Country Co-ordinator, Karen Shugg who has worked tirelessly over the past month to organise the day.

At the conclusion of the individual presentations, the perpetual Champion Club was presented to the Werribee Athletics Centre.

Peppertree Park, in the centre of Bacchus Marsh, was the location for this week's cross country meet.  The local junior football/netball, which this week was scheduled for Saturday rather than Sunday, did not seem to have an affect on our numbers competing, mainly due to the close vicinity of both events.  Many athletes were able to squeeze in a run either prior to, or after their matches.

Many thanks to everyone for their co-operation with keeping the start/finish line clear this week.  Our officials certainly found recording so much easier - thank you.

Next week will be our Centre Cross Country Open Day at the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse commencing at 11am.  This event is a chance to run against athletes from other Regions. Cost of entry is $8.00 per competitor.  Entries must be submitted to Karen Shugg by this Monday 14th May.

The 2012 Centre Annual General Meeting was held tonight.  Congratulations to the elected Executive Committee for 2012/13.

Currently we have 3 vacant positions on the Committee, please feel free to chat to one of our Executive members regarding these positions or contact our President, Peter Dickson on  0428 538 040 if you are interested.

Grants to help young people pursue their sporting dreams.
Young people find it difficult to meet the ongoing and significant costs associated with participation at sporting competitions, particularly those from regional areas.
The Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance for young people aged 12-18 towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation (NSO) endorsed state, national or international sporting championships or a School Sport Australia state or national championships.

Grant applications are assessed 3 times each year.  Round 1 grants are now open, closing June 30.  MORE INFORMATION

 5/05/12  BMLAC Cross Country Open Day

BMLAC Open Day will be held Saturday 19th May at the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse & Recreation Reserve, Bacchus Marsh/Balliang Road, Maddingley commencing at 11am.

 05/05/12  Cross Country at Lady Northcote Camp

This week's cross country meet was held at Lady Northcote Camp, Rowsley.  This venue provides varying terrain for our runners and is a picturesque viewing course for supporters.  The weather was a little cooler this week and fortunately the rain held off for us to successfully complete the 5 distance events and a toddler race for the younger brothers and sisters.

Can we please ask parents to ensure that their children are kept clear from the finish/start line area if they are not officially participating in the race that is being conducted.  This week the recorders found it quite confusing with other athletes running across the finish line - on a number of occasion results were recorded for those athletes who were not suppose to be competing.  Thank you for your co-operation.

Some ladies were seen enjoying a coffee at the end of the day and were unfortunately left behind at Lady Northcote.  If you are the owner of these young ladies HERE please contact Karen Shugg on 0400 502485.

Next week's run will be held at Peppertree Park, Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh commencing at 10.30am.  Please arrive by 10.15am to collect last week's ticket and walk the course.

 02/05/12  State Cross Country Championships

The 2012 State Cross Country Championships will be held at Lardner Park, Lardner (Warragul) on Sunday August 5th, 2012
Venue: Lardner Park, 155 Burnt Store Rd, Lardner, 3821
This event is a distance running event for athletes in our Under 7 to Under 15 age groups - both boys and girls.
Championship Events apply only to the U9-U15 age groups.
The 2012 'Invitational Race' is open to U7/U8 registered athletes only- no entries will be accepted for the U6 age group.
Athletes run as individuals but can make up a team. Team medals are awarded to the first three competitors that cross the finish line; a Centre must have three athletes competing in the same age group and from the same Centre.

The distances the age groups run depend on the age group:
Under 7 - Under 8 1000m
Under 9 - Under 10 1500m
Under 11 - Under 12 2000m
Under 13 - Under 15 3000m

Today our Cross Country season commenced in perfect conditions at Mason's Lane Reserve.  It was extremely pleasing to see so many new faces at cross country and also pleasing, was the return of many past athletes.  This week we had over 75 runners compete across various distances, ranging from 500m for our younger athletes through to 3000m for our senior age group runners.  While some athletes chose to have a light run, others opted to have a competitive hit out for their first week.  Many thanks to all the parents who 'pitched in' and help out with either set-up, registrations, recording, canteen/bbq or rabbitting.  Without the support of these parents our weekly runs would not be available - thank you all.

Next week's run will be held at Lady Northcote Camp, Rowsley commencing at 10.30am.  Please arrive by 10.15am at the latest.  This will allow time to collect previous week's results and walk the course.  New athletes are more than welcome to attend and have a run.

 25/04/12  BMLAC Cross Country Open Day

The 2012 BMLAC Cross Country Open Day will be held on Saturday 19th May at the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse & Recreation Reserve, Bacchus Marsh/Balliang Road, Maddingley commencing at 11am.

Cost of entry is $8.00 per competitor.  Entries close on Monday 14th May.

 23/04/12  BMLAC Cross Country starts this week

The 2012 BMLAC Cross Country will commence this Saturday 28th April at Mason's Lane at 11am. 

Cross Country is open to all registered athletes at no cost.  New members are most welcome to register - cost $65.00.  Bacchus Marsh Cross Country is run at various locations - Mason's Lane, Peppertree Park Bacchus Marsh, Bostock Reservoir Ballan, Lake Dewar Myrniong, Lady Northcote Rowsley, Greendale Reserve & Myrniong Reserve.

Athletes will participate in the following events: 

Under 6 - 500m

Under 7-8 - 1000m

Under 9-10 - 1500m

Under 11-12 - 2000m

Under 13-16 - 3000m

Cross Country is a winter sport and we run, hail or shine!
